4 Meal Prepping Tips That Don’t Take Hours

April 23, 2020 | By: The Darling Dish

Are you tired of cooking every meal by now? Whether meal prepping sounds intimidating to you, or you're stuck in a rut with your usual routine, we’re talking about some of our favorite tips for saving time in the kitchen and having ready-to-go meals when you’d rather order takeout. Small tweaks make a big difference in keeping your menu anything but boring!

1. Start Small

Don’t feel like you have to prep for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next 5 days in one afternoon. Prepping a few things here and there can really make a difference without having to sacrifice hours at a time. Make a big batch of oatmeal to have a few mornings worth of breakfast ready, or make a kale salad that will hold up for a couple days to have something on hand when you’re hungry (more like hangry)...

2. Prep Ingredients, Not Meals

If you aren’t a fan of eating the same meal multiple days in a row, that doesn’t mean meal prepping isn’t for you! Instead of making full meals, just cook individual ingredients that you can mix and match depending on what you’re in the mood for. Cook a big batch of grains such as rice or bulgur wheat (for a delicious tabbouleh) and roast a sheet pan of assorted vegetables like zucchini, asparagus, broccoli, and sweet potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Throw in your favorite protein on a separate sheet pan to roast along with the veggies, and in about 30 minutes you will have all the components to make killer grain bowls! To take them to the next level, squeeze a little Darling Lemon® juice over them when they’re done.Reheat in the oven or air fryer for best results!

3. Sauces and Dressings are Key to Keeping it Interesting

Eating plain chicken breasts for days on end can get a little boring, and life is just too short for boring food. Make a couple different sauces or dressings to completely transform the flavor of your dish, like this Tangy Darling Citrus® Sauce or Suavo Avocado® Green Goddess Dressing. Use on proteins, vegetables, salads, mix into grains, or top your morning eggs- the possibilities are endless!

4. Make in Bulk and Freeze

Frozen dinners come in handy when we don’t feel like cooking, but sometimes they fall flat on flavor value. When planning to make a meal, think about doubling the recipe and freezing the other half so you can have twice the food with only one round of clean up. Make a batch of these Whole30® Suavo Avocado® Chicken Burger Sliders, freeze the uncooked patties, and then simply thaw and cook in a skillet or over the grill when you’re ready to eat them. For best results, separate each patty with parchment paper to keep them from sticking together.

Let us know if you try any of these tips, or if you have some of your own to add! Happy cooking, Darling.
