It’s the start of avocado season in Chile, and we are taking a walk through the fields to explain why it is an ideal location to grow these green gems. We’re also giving you the low-down on why this super fruit is a nutritional powerhouse, plus a few more ways to use them beyond toast (but who doesn’t love a good avocado toast recipe?).
Chile is a major source of the avocados we enjoy in the U.S. The winter season runs through the months of May through August when the land receives the most rain. But starting in September, a 7-8 month dry season begins with a Mediterranean-like climate, creating ideal conditions for growing avocados. This year is no exception as weather conditions are ideal after a moderate winter. Over 90% of the avocados exported from Chile are Hass avocados, known for their creaminess due to a high oil content.
Avocados are a good source of vitamins b6, C, and folate per 100g.
Avocados contain a mix of polyunsaturated (PUFA’s) and monounsaturated fats (MUFA’s).
