4 Tips for Storing Suavo Avocados®

Written by Darling Dish | October 11, 2024

Did you know Suavo Avocados® can remain on the tree for extended periods - sometimes even up to a year - without becoming overripe? This is because unlike most fruits, avocados don’t begin to ripen until picked. Their unique ripening process can make it a bit tricky to determine “how” and “when” is best in picking, storing and enjoying these delicious green gems. Check out some of our tips for storing Suavo Avocados® to enjoy at peak freshness!

How to: Pick Avocados at the Grocery Store

Picking avocados at the grocery store can be an art - but it’s an easy one to learn! Begin by scanning for avocados with dark green to black skin, which are more likely to be mature. Pick up a few of your preferred color and feel for a slight firmness that gives a little when pressed, indicating it’s not fully ripe. Weight is another good indicator of quality; a heavy weight to size ratio suggests that they’re loaded with creamy goodness. It can also be helpful to consider when you may want to enjoy the avocados. Less ripe avocados have a longer shelf life, giving more flexibility to enjoy them at your convenience.

Most importantly, make sure it’s the right brand! We take pride in sourcing the best tasting and highest quality fruit from farms around the world to ensure you and your loved ones can enjoy your favorite fresh flavors year-round. When you choose Suavo Avocados®, you’re choosing fresh, creamy and delicious fruit the whole family will love!

How to: Properly Store Avocados at Home

Proper storage is key to keeping your Suavo Avocados® fresh to enjoy at peak quality! We recommend storing according to what stage of ripening your fruit is in:

We recommend storing your avocados as listed below, according to stage of ripening the fruit is in:

  • Unripe avocados: Store unripe avocados at room temperature to ripen in about 4-5 days
  • Ripe avocados: Once ripe, place avocados in the refrigerator to enjoy within 2-3 days
  • Cut avocados: Want to save some of your already cut avocado for later? Spritz a little Darling Lemon® or Darling Lime® juice on the exposed flesh to prevent browning, and store in an airtight container to keep for about a day.

How to: Speed Up Avocado Ripening Process

Can’t wait any longer to savor creamy Suavo Avocado® deliciousness? Speed up the ripening process by placing your avocados in a brown paper bag along with an apple or a banana. Ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that promotes ripening, emitting from these fruits will create an environment that accelerates the ripening process. Be sure to check your Suavo Avocados® daily to ensure they reach the desired level of ripeness!

How to: Determine Avocado Ripeness

At last - it’s almost time to enjoy a flavorful Suavo Avocado® at peak freshness. Give your avocados a gentle squeeze, feeling for a texture that gives slightly more and is softer, yet still firm. The float test is another fun hack that can indicate if the avocado is ready to cut and serve. Simply place the fruit in a bowl of water - unripe avocados will typically float due to the density of their seed and air-filled pockets in the flesh. Ripe avocados generally sink as they become denser as they ripen. If you want to be extra sure, combine the two techniques to ensure you’re savoring your Suavo Avocados® at their best!
