4 Tips for Beginner Chefs

With the kids home for the summer, it’s the perfect time to get them in the kitchen. Starting early is a great way to develop their creativity and spend quality time together. But the journey has to start somewhere, and sometimes it can be difficult to pique their interest. That’s why we compiled a list of tips that you can try with your kids for a great place to get started. 

Before we start, let’s go over some of the kitchen’s preliminary rules with your kids:

  1. Wash your hands: Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly to make sure your hands are nice and clean to start cooking.
  2. Pull your hair back: No one wants hair in their food, so be sure to use a hair tie to pull your hair back in a ponytail.
  3. Pull back your sleeves: Messes will be made in the kitchen, but let’s be sure the mess stays on the counters and not clothes. 
  4. Be careful around sharp and hot objects: Be sure to be super cautious with these objects, and remember to only try cooked food when it’s cooled down. 

Now, let’s get into the cooking! Here are a few of our go-to tips for making meals more fun:

1. Make It Colorful

Kids are drawn to bright colors, so try making dishes that incorporate as many colors as possible. A vibrant fruit salad made with Darling Clementines ®  is a perfect place to start! 

 

2. Bring Imagination In

Whether it’s broccoli trees or cauliflower sheep, we’re giving you permission to play with your food! Even simple projects like decorating clementines can be a great way to get the kids comfortable being in the kitchen!

 

3. Find Fun Textures

From fluffy whipped cream to chewy cookies or crunchy celery sticks, incorporate a variety of textures into your dishes to keep kids curious. 

 

4. Mix it Up

Finding recipes that let them mix together all the pieces is a fun way to visibly see all the ingredients that go into their food. Our Whole30 Paleo Suavo Avocado Chicken Salad is a perfect example! Each one puts in one ingredient in the bowl and everyone gets a turn mixing it. Then everyone can stuff their romaine leaves (or “boats”) however they want to. Let their creativity fly!
